How do you get households to separate their food waste, and what happens to it next? Join AORA to hear results from a 500-household FOGO trial that lifted food waste diversion from 19% to 48%, new research on how councils, processors and residents manage FOGO, and a site tour of the Veolia Bulla composting facility to see organics recycling first hand.
From 19% to 48% Food Waste Diversion: Lessons from a 500-Household FOGO Trial
How can a simple kitchen caddy liner, combined with targeted household engagement, help improve food waste diversion?
This presentation explores the findings of a 500-household trial conducted in partnership with Darebin City Council, introducing The Good Sort, a Melbourne-made kitchen caddy liner manufactured from 100% recycled paper.
Through the introduction of paper liners, household education and targeted engagement, the trial saw food waste diversion increase from 19% to 48%. But what drove this improvement, how did household behaviour change, and what happened to contamination as more food waste entered the FOGO stream?
The presentation will share key findings from the trial, including changes in food waste diversion, household participation rates, contamination levels, and insights into what motivates or prevents households from separating their food waste.
