FOGO contamination is a perennial issue for composters and whilst a range of solutions exist for cleaning up mid fractions, the decontamination of the fines fraction (ie. compost or soil conditioners) is a more challenging task. Composters remain burdened with high volumes of impurities, such as glass, metal or plastic that render the compost non-compliant with standards such as AS 4454 and quality requirements of the market. These contaminants can only be removed to a certain extent with conventional treatment technology before and after the biological treatment phase.
Whilst a common strategy is to simply screen to a smaller fraction, to 10mm for example, too many foreign particles may remain in the compost product. These plastics create increased problems for plant operators, particularly in regard to increased requirements of the compost users in relation to emerging microplastics in the soil.
