The FOGO mandate deadline isn’t moving. Are you ready?

  • May 29, 2026

Organics processors and councils are fast running out of time to establish compliant FOGO processing solutions to meet the 2030 deadline. The pressure is on to find a composting solution that is fast, compliant, odour-controlled, and cost-effective.

Through local partner and integrator SKALA Environmental, the Eggersmann Convaero system is a specialized Covered Aerated Static Pile (CASP) technology that bridges the gap between open windrows and expensive high-end IVC tunnel solutions.

The Innovation: The Membrane Cover
At the heart of the system is the high-tech membrane. This isn’t just a tarp; it’s a semi-permeable membrane that acts as a bio-filter.
  • Odour Containment: It retains moisture and odourous compounds within the pile, achieving odour reduction rates in excess of 90%.
  • Leachate reduction: The Convaero membrane keeps rain out (preventing leachate spikes) while allowing to escape, ensuring the microbes have the perfect “controlled” ecosystem regardless of the weather outside.

The Magic: Controlled Aeration
FOGO composting requires precision. The Convaero system uses a proven aeration floor and automated blowers linked to oxygen and temperature sensors.
  • Pathogen Destruction: By maintaining thermophilic temperatures above 55°C the system ensures the final compost is pasteurised and weed-free.
  • Active Monitoring: The software adjusts airflow in real-time, preventing the pile from going anaerobic—the primary cause of “sour” smells in food waste processing.

An affordable OPEX solution
Compared to more costly in-vessel tunnels, the Convaero system offers significant operational savings:
  1. Lower Infrastructure Costs: It requires minimal permanent civil works compared to IVC.
  2. Scalability: You can add “lanes” as your FOGO or GO volumes grow.
  3. Reduced Handling: Because the membrane creates a controlled environment, the need for frequent pile turning is substantially reduced, saving on fuel and labour.

Key Features
  • Footprint: Flexible, modular design suitable for small to large-scale facilities.
  • Processing Time: Accelerated 4–6 week intensive composting phase.
  • Compliance: Enables compliance with environmental standards for urban-fringe composting sites.

The goal is to achieve high-quality compost with zero community complaints. The Eggersmann Convaero system can deliver exactly that—industrial-scale efficiency with a minimal environmental footprint.
